Menopause: symptoms treated, and the years after planned for

Menopause is not an illness, but its symptoms can disrupt sleep, mood, work and relationships for years – and the fall in oestrogen affects bones and the heart long after the flushes stop. At Sradha Women Care symptoms are treated on their merits, and the long-term consequences are planned for, with a frank discussion of hormone therapy and its alternatives.

What changes, and when

Perimenopause – irregular periods, flushes, disturbed sleep and mood changes – often begins in the mid-forties and can last several years before periods stop altogether. Each phase has different needs and different risks that need watching.

Symptoms assessed

Hot flushes and night sweats, sleep, mood and concentration, vaginal dryness and pain with intercourse, bladder symptoms and joint aches.

Health checked

Blood pressure, weight, thyroid and sugar; lipids; and a discussion of bone health – the silent consequence of menopause.

Treatment options

Hormone therapy is safe and effective for most women under 60 or within ten years of menopause, and there are good non-hormonal options for those who cannot or prefer not to take it.

Hormone therapy

Its benefits, its risks and its duration set out honestly for your situation, with the lowest effective dose and regular review.

Non-hormonal options

Effective medicines for flushes and mood, local treatment for vaginal symptoms, and lifestyle measures that genuinely help sleep and weight.

Protecting the years ahead

The decisions made around menopause affect bone, heart and metabolic health for the next thirty years.

Bone health

Calcium, vitamin D, weight-bearing activity and, where risk is high, bone density testing and treatment to prevent fracture.

Heart and metabolic health

Blood pressure, sugar and lipids monitored, because the risk of heart disease rises after menopause and is reduced by early attention.
In summary

Bleeding after menopause

Any bleeding a year or more after periods have stopped is not part of menopause and must be assessed – with an ultrasound and, where the lining is thickened, a sample. It is usually benign, but the check must never be skipped.
